Draw It Out®

Mud Fever Treatment for Horses — Clean • Dry • Protect

Mud, wet, friction. That combo turns pasterns cranky fast. Skip the drama—run a calm, repeatable routine that fits real barn life and keeps your program moving.

Pastern Dermatitis Basics Barn-Proven Routine Vet-Partnered Mindset

Why mud fever shows up

Constant moisture

Mud + wet bedding keep skin soggy. Soggy skin gets irritated and scabby.

Friction

Sand, grit, long feathering, and boots can rub already-sensitive skin.

Slow dry time

Cold snaps and long hair trap dampness around heels and bulbs.

Every barn is different. Control what you can: dryness, cleanliness, and gentle handling.

90-second routine (repeatable & calm)

  • Soften & loosen: If caked, use a light pass of RTU Spray or clean water to loosen dirt—no harsh scrubbing.
  • Clean gently: Rinse or wipe away mud and grit. Pat dry thoroughly—between heel bulbs counts.
  • Protect: Apply a thin, even layer of RESTOREaHORSE® to clean, dry skin.
  • Moisture management: Around the hoof/heel area, maintain with Silver Hoof EQ Therapy® to help handle wet/dry swings.
  • Repeat: Run the routine daily until the area looks settled. Keep turnout areas as dry as possible.

If hair is long and trapping moisture, ask your veterinarian or groomer about careful trimming for better airflow.

Before & After

Before and after results following a calm, repeatable mud-fever routine with Draw It Out®.
Rider-submitted results after running the clean → dry → protect routine. Results vary by horse, footing, and weather.

Do this, not that

Goal Do this Avoid this
Get it clean Gentle rinse/wipe; soften mud first. Harsh scrubbing or picking scabs to bleeding.
Keep it dry Pat dry fully; add airflow; swap wet wraps/bedding. Leaving damp under boots/wraps or turning out wet.
Protect the skin Thin protective layer on clean, dry skin. Thick gobs on wet, dirty skin that trap moisture.
Stay consistent Same calm steps daily. New product every day; overhandling the area.

Fast answers

Wrap or leave open?

Only wrap if your veterinarian recommends it, and never over damp skin. If you wrap, change to clean, dry materials daily and allow products to absorb first.

Clip the area?

Light, careful trimming can help skin stay dry. If you’re unsure, ask your vet or groomer for the safest approach.

How long until it looks better?

Many riders run the routine daily through wet spells. If you see heat, pain, lameness, spreading lesions, or no improvement—call your veterinarian.
