From a tiny snip to a full bald face, white markings add identity and character. Here’s a simple breakdown you can use for descriptions, registrations, or just bragging on your good one.
A white spot on the forehead. Size and shape vary—round, irregular, or multi-pointed.
A narrow white line down the bridge of the nose. Width and length range from delicate to bold.
A white mark on the muzzle or upper lip—tiny speck to a larger patch.
A wider white band down the face, typically broader than a stripe but not covering the entire face.
Extensive white across much of the face, often around eyes and muzzle; may pair with blue eyes.
White at the hairline above the hoof.
White from coronet to the pastern.
White to (or just above) the fetlock.
White extending higher—toward knee or hock. Can be on one or multiple legs.
External use on intact skin only. Avoid eyes and sensitive areas. Follow label directions.
Foals may “fill in” or refine with age, but the basic placement stays consistent. Photos at key ages help with ID.
Yes—both run down the face, but a blaze is wider. People sometimes use “strip/stripe” interchangeably for narrow markings.
Not necessarily—routine washing, drying, and regular grooming usually do the job. Choose products that fit your horse and show rules.
For any skin or hoof concerns that don’t improve with routine care, consult your veterinarian and farrier.
