Why Horses Move Short Strided

When your horse feels tight, shorter through their step, or less willing to move out, it is rarely laziness. Short strides happen when the body is tight, guarded, or unsure.

What Riders Notice First

  • Not stepping into their own hoofprints
  • Feeling “tight” at the start of the ride
  • Shorter on one rein or one direction
  • Reluctant to stretch or reach forward
Short strides are often early communication that something does not feel right, even when there is no obvious limp.

Common Causes

  • Cold weather stiffness
  • Back or SI tension
  • Shoulder or girth area discomfort
  • Loss of topline strength
  • Hoof balance issues

Quick Rider Checks

  • Feel the back and loins for tight spots
  • Watch straight lines for even reach
  • Try a longer warm up, does it help
  • Check saddle and girth comfort
