Cannon crud is a barn term for waxy, crusty, flaky, or greasy buildup on the cannon area. The answer is not aggressive scrubbing. It is better inspection, cleaner gear, full drying, and the right skin-care path.

Slow down if

  • The area is unusually hot, swollen, painful, draining, bleeding, or spreading.
  • The horse is sensitive to touch or reacting strongly.
  • Multiple legs or multiple horses are affected.

What to check

  • Location: front cannons, hind cannons, one leg, or all four?
  • Texture: waxy, greasy, flaky, crusty, scabby, or thickened?
