Ingredient and Herbal Safety: Label and Competition Checks

“Natural” and “herbal” do not establish that a product is appropriate for every animal or permitted at every competition. Review the actual formula, the animal it is intended for, and the rules that apply to your event.

Read the whole label

  • Confirm the intended species and route of use. An equine topical is not automatically suitable for a dog or for feeding.
  • Check ingredients, directions, cautions, and storage instructions.
  • Consider other products already being used on the same area or in the ration.
  • Ask the manufacturer for clarification when an ingredient or blend is unclear.

Check competition rules for the event

For FEI competition, consult the FEI Equine Prohibited Substances List and FEI substance database. For USEF competition, use the USEF Drugs & Medications resources. Different governing bodies may apply different requirements.

Check current rules before use and again before competition. A familiar ingredient name, topical route, or “show-safe” phrase is not blanket clearance for a formula. If you are unsure, provide the full label to your veterinarian and the relevant governing body before using the product.

Be careful with incomplete information

The FEI cautions that herbal products may contain prohibited substances, including ingredients not clearly declared. Keep the label, batch details, and a record of use. A marketing page cannot provide an individual withdrawal time or guarantee a negative test.

Use the product-specific directions

Check the current Draw It Out® listing and the label on your container. Do not transfer directions or ingredient assurances from one product to another. Stop use and seek appropriate professional advice if an animal develops an unexpected reaction.
