Post‑Ride Leg Care for Horses: Cooling, Recovery & Wraps

The ride ends, but care doesn’t. A horse that cools right and recovers clean stays sound longer. Here’s how to give those legs the Cadillac treatment without losing the cowboy grit.

Step 1 — Cool the fire

After work, hose or sponge cool water down each leg. Always scrape between passes—water that lingers traps heat. For hot spots, a quick pass of CryoSpray® gives fast, show‑safe relief.

Step 2 — Thin, steady support

On clean, dry legs, apply a thin layer of Draw It Out® 16oz High Potency Gel. It stays where you put it, won’t sting, and plays nice under wraps. This step adds quiet support that shows in tomorrow’s stride.

Step 3 — Wrap with care

  1. Start with clean quilts or no‑bow wraps.
  2. Roll snug, even pressure—two fingers under the edge.
  3. Check again after 30–45 minutes for heat, slip, or tightness.
Note: Skip wrapping if the skin is wet or irritated. Better to cool and turn out than trap trouble.

Step 4 — Log and learn

Every horse is different. Note which legs puff, how long they tighten, and what products help. Patterns today guide better care tomorrow.

Post‑Ride FAQ

What’s the risk of skipping cooling?

Heat lingers deep in tendons, raising risk of swelling and soreness. Cooling is the cheapest insurance you’ve got.

Can I wrap overnight?

Yes, for known stockers—but only if wraps are applied clean and checked. Always reassess in the morning.

Which product first—CryoSpray® or Gel?

Cool water and CryoSpray® first. Once dry, apply gel for lingering support under wraps.

Educational content only—not a diagnosis. Always follow label directions and association rules. For persistent swelling or lameness, consult your veterinarian.
