Horse Skin Guide

Cannon Crud in Horses

Cannon crud can show up as crusty buildup, flaky skin, scabs, hair loss, or irritation on the lower legs. It may be related to moisture, dirt, mites, bacterial irritation, grooming gaps, or skin sensitivity.

What to check

  • Moisture, mud, sweat, or dirty wraps.
  • Scabs, swelling, heat, pain, or discharge.
  • Whether one horse or several horses are affected.
  • Blankets, boots, grooming tools, and footing.

Support routine

Keep the area clean and dry. Use skin support products according to label directions. Call your veterinarian for swelling, pain, open skin, infection concern, or cases that keep returning.
