A dull coat in mid-summer can be grooming, sweat, dust, diet, parasites, sun, stress, or health. The coat is not the whole horse, but it is often a useful report card.
If your horse’s coat turns dull mid-summer, check grooming routine, sweat buildup, sun bleaching, feed, weight, water, salt, parasite control, skin flakes, itching, and overall attitude. Call your veterinarian for weight loss, dullness with poor appetite, skin disease, severe itching, fever, or a coat change that does not fit the season or horse.
Groom to the skin. Rinse sweat when needed and dry well. Review feed and water. Look for itching or scabs. If the horse is losing weight, acting dull, or showing skin problems, call your veterinarian.
Use the Horse Health Library for skin and coat education. If the concern points toward skin, hoof, travel, or stiffness, use What Does My Horse Need?.
Sweat, dust, sun, diet, parasites, skin irritation, stress, or health changes can all contribute.
Not automatically. Check skin, sweat, nutrition, and overall condition first.
