Draw It Out® | Cooling

Horse Cooling Solutions

Cooling is not just about pulling heat. It is about recovery, circulation, sweat reset, and keeping horses ready for the next ride. This rider-first system helps manage heat quickly without menthol burn, perfumes, or residue.

Quick takeaway. Cool first. Stay simple. Match the routine to the work the horse just did. Use full-body cooling for overall heat, targeted cooling for hot spots, then a thin layer of liniment gel once the horse is cool and dry. In fly season, move to fly protection only after the coat is clean and ready.

Horse and rider working hard at speed in an indoor arena, illustrating when a cooling routine matters most

This is the moment cooling routines are built for: a horse that has actually worked, a rider asking for effort, and real decisions around heat, sweat, hydration, flies, and recovery.

Pick your cooling path

Match the product to the job. The cleaner the routine, the easier it is to repeat after work, hauling, shows, and hot-weather turnout.

IceBath™ for full-body cooling

Use IceBath™ when the whole horse needs a calm reset. It fits overall cool-down and gentle no-rinse body wash use when diluted 1:10.

No menthol No residue

CryoSpray® for targeted heat

Use CryoSpray® when you want fast, mess-free spot cooling on hot legs, joints, or larger muscle groups that need more focused attention.

Horse being handled after work, supporting the cooling, coat reset, hydration, and fly protection follow-through routine

After the work is done, the next decisions matter: cool the horse, reset sweat and salt, support hydration, and apply fly protection only once the coat is clean and ready.

Cooling only matters if the horse actually worked

The strongest cooling routine starts with the actual workload. Not a polished pose. Not a fake lifestyle moment. Real speed, real sweat, real heat, and a rider who needs the horse to recover cleanly.

  • Use broader cooling when the whole horse is hot and the work was sustained.
  • Use targeted cooling when one area is carrying more heat than the rest.
  • Do not stack products randomly. Cool first. Dry thoroughly. Then choose the follow-through step that fits.
  • In fly season, do not spray over sweat and dirt. Reset the coat first, then move to the fly protection routine.

Quick cooling routines

Use these as simple barn flows. They are built to keep cooling, drying, hydration, and fly protection in the right order.

Post-ride cool-down, 5 to 10 minutes

  1. Scrape excess sweat or hose briefly.
  2. Apply IceBath™ 1:10 for full-body cooling and let air dry.
  3. Follow hot spots with CryoSpray® where targeted cooling fits.
  4. Finish with a thin layer of 16oz High Potency Liniment Gel once the horse is cooled and dry.
  5. If flies are active, move to fly protection only after the coat is clean and ready.

Hauling and hot-weather reset

  1. Move the horse to shade or airflow.
  2. Mist or sponge IceBath™ along the topline and hindquarters.
  3. Target joints, tendons, or larger muscle groups with CryoSpray® where needed.
  4. Walk out, offer water, and monitor attitude, sweat, and recovery.
  5. Use the hydration hub if sweat, hauling, or picky drinking is part of the problem.

Show-day speed clean

  1. Mix IceBath™ 1:10.
  2. Sponge on, avoiding eyes and nostrils.
  3. Towel off excess and groom once dry.
  4. Apply fly protection only after the coat is clean, dry, and ready for even coverage.

The summer stack: cooling, hydration, coat, flies

Hot weather is rarely just one problem. Heat, sweat, hydration, dirty coats, and fly pressure stack together. Keep this page focused on cooling, then route the next question to the right guide.

Full-body cool-down IceBath™ Use 1:10 as a sponge or spray routine, then air dry. Recheck recovery, hydration, and coat condition.
Hot legs or muscles CryoSpray® Spray evenly where targeted cooling fits, then let dry. Follow with liniment gel only after the horse is cooled and dry.
Post-cooling support 16oz High Potency Liniment Gel Apply a thin, even layer after cooling. Do not over-layer; keep the routine calm and repeatable.
Clean coat before turnout Fly Protection Routine Brush, cool, reset sweat and salt, dry where possible, then apply fly protection as directed. Use the fly protection hub.

Always spot-test. Avoid eyes, nostrils, mucous membranes, and open wounds. Use common-sense horsemanship in extreme heat and contact your veterinarian for abnormal, severe, or worsening signs.

Red flags: when cooling is not enough

Call your veterinarian when your horse is dull, distressed, weak, uncoordinated, not drinking, not sweating when expected, breathing hard, showing abnormal vitals, painful, colic-like, collapsing, or worsening despite cooling and rest.

Cooling products support routine care. They do not replace veterinary evaluation when the horse looks abnormal or unsafe.

Horse cooling FAQ

Is this show-safe?
These cooling solutions are built for show-smart routines when used as directed. Always follow current product labels and the rules for your discipline, event, or facility.
Do I need to rinse IceBath™?
No. For routine cooling or light cleaning, dilute IceBath™ 1:10 and let air dry.
IceBath™ or CryoSpray® — which do I choose?
IceBath™ fits overall cooling and cleaning. CryoSpray® fits fast targeted heat on specific areas.
Where does fly protection fit after cooling?
Fly protection belongs after the horse is cooled and the coat is brushed, cleaner, and dry enough for even coverage. Do not spray over heavy sweat, mud, dirt, irritated skin, or open wounds. Use the Fly Protection Routine for the full application flow.
How do hydration and cooling work together?
Cooling reduces heat load, while hydration supports recovery after sweat, hauling, work, and hot weather. Offer water during the recovery window and use the hydration hub when drinking, sweat, or electrolyte decisions are part of the problem.
Can I use this daily?
Yes. These formulas are designed for frequent use without drying the coat or leaving residue when used as directed.
