Cold Backed Horse? Here’s The Quick Rider Guide

A horse that hollows their back, gets tense at the mounting block, or gives a few tight strides before settling isn’t automatically misbehaving. Many horses feel cold-backed when muscles are stiff, the saddle doesn’t sit quite right, or past discomfort is still in their memory.

What Riders Notice First

  • Hollowing or bracing when the saddle pad touches
  • Sidestepping, walking off, or tension at the mounting block
  • Bouncy or tight first steps under saddle
  • Resistance that melts away once they warm up
Cold-backed behavior is your horse saying: “Give me a second — my back isn’t ready yet.”

Common Causes

  • Stiff topline muscles from cold weather or limited turnout
  • Poor saddle or girth fit
  • Lingering soreness from old injuries
  • Memories of past discomfort during mounting

What Riders Can Do Right Away

  • Girth up slowly, one hole at a time
  • Give 3–5 minutes of movement before mounting
  • Mount from a block to reduce torque
  • Start with loose-rein walking to let the back warm up

How Draw It Out® Fits In

Many riders support their horses with Draw It Out® 16oz Gel on the back and girth line before and after rides. Draw It Out® Concentrate helps in post-work routines. CryoSpray Cooling Body Brace is used after harder schooling days. MasterMudd™ supports deeper soft tissue areas when guided by a vet or body worker.
