Why Horses Stumble Or Trip

A stumble now and then happens. But repeated tripping — especially under saddle — is your horse letting you know something feels off in their body, balance, or hooves.

What Riders Notice First

  • Your horse “catches” a front toe
  • Worse stumbling when tired
  • Tripping more on one rein or direction
  • Stumbling during collected or tight work
Repeated tripping is not clumsiness. It is information — and your horse is asking you to look closer.

Common Causes

  • Hoof balance or long toes
  • Back or neck discomfort
  • Weak hind end or loss of topline
  • Saddle fit changes
  • Fatigue from tough rides or poor footing
  • More rarely: neurological issues

Quick Rider Checks

  • Feel along the back/loins — tight spots?
  • Watch walk/trot straight — even stride?
  • Try a few poles — do they trip more?
  • Check if hooves are overdue
