Horse Shifting Weight Constantly

When a horse keeps shifting weight, rocking back and forth, or refusing to stand square, it’s not fidgeting — it’s feedback. This quick guide helps you spot what’s driving the discomfort.

What Riders Notice First

  • Horse won’t stand square for more than a moment
  • Alternates weight between hind legs repeatedly
  • Steps away when asked to load a limb
  • Pairs weight-shifting with toe-dragging or stiffness
Weight-shifting is the horse trying to reduce load on a limb, hoof, or joint.

Common Causes

  • Hoof soreness, sole bruises, or poor hoof balance
  • Hock or stifle discomfort
  • Suspensory strain (especially hind branches)
  • SI or back tension
  • Muscle fatigue after heavy work
  • Early laminitis (major red flag)

Quick Rider Checks

  • Is the horse shifting more on hard footing
  • Any heat, swelling, or increased digital pulse
  • Does standing square look uncomfortable
  • Does warmup improve weight-bearing
  • Any reluctance to pick up a hoof
