Fetlock Swelling In Horses

Fetlock swelling can show up overnight, after a tough workout, or out of nowhere. Most swelling is the body responding to irritation, circulation changes, or soft tissue stress. This quick guide helps you spot the patterns fast.

What Riders Notice First

  • Puffy fetlock after stall time
  • One fetlock fuller than the other
  • Soft cool swelling or warm tight swelling
  • Shorter step or mild hesitation
Swelling around the fetlock is information. Your job is to tell if it is a normal response or a sign of deeper trouble.

Common Causes

  • Simple stocking up
  • Post workout inflammation
  • Soft tissue strain near tendons or suspensory
  • Joint capsule irritation or arthritis
  • Infection or cellulitis (always urgent)

Quick Rider Checks

  • Is the swelling warm or cool
  • Does light movement reduce it
  • Is your horse short striding
  • Is only one leg affected
  • Any wounds near the joint
