Stifle Pain & Swelling In Horses

Stifle pain can feel like weakness, hesitation, or slipping behind. Some horses show mild swelling; others show clicking, toe-dragging, or locking. This quick guide helps you spot stifle trouble early.

What Riders Notice First

  • Dragging the toe or uneven push from behind
  • Clicking or popping when stepping off or backing
  • Mild swelling above or around the stifle
  • Hesitation picking up a hind leg
Stifle issues often show up as “inconsistency” before they show up as a true limp.

Common Causes

  • Soft tissue strain or ligament tension
  • Joint effusion or irritation after hard work
  • Stifle weakness or imbalance
  • Upward fixation of the patella (locking stifle)
  • Impact or slip injuries

Quick Rider Checks

  • Is swelling warm or cool
  • Is the stride even or skipping
  • Does backing feel stiff or sticky
  • Any toe-dragging in straight lines
  • Any clicking, popping, or “slip” sensation
