What Is Roan? Genetics & Definition
Roan = evenly mixed white and colored hairs, while head and legs stay solid.
It’s a stable coat (doesn’t change seasonally like gray), passed via the dominant Roan gene.
Primary types—blue, strawberry (red), bay—are based on the underlying base coat.
Blue Roan
Black base coat mixed with white hairs—creates a steel-gray or slate look.
Dappling is often faint and blends with the coat for a smoky effect.
Look for a dark mane, tail, and legs against the roany body.
Strawberry (Red) Roan
Chestnut or sorrel base with white hairs—warm, rose-toned blend.
Dapples can pop in sunlight, giving a glowing wash across the body.
Mane and tail may be lighter or strawberry-hued too.

Can roan hide skin conditions?
