Chestnut Horse Guide: Color, Genetics, Sorrel & Shades
A chestnut horse has a red-based coat and no true black pigment in the mane, tail, lower legs, or body. The shade may range from light copper to deep liver chestnut.
What is a chestnut horse?
Quick answer: A chestnut horse is genetically red. Most chestnuts have two recessive red-factor alleles at the MC1R, or Extension, gene and do not produce black pigment in the coat. The body, mane, tail, and lower legs stay within the red family, even when some areas are much lighter or darker.

How to identify a chestnut horse
Start with the points, not the overall darkness. A chestnut can be pale orange-red, bright copper, dark mahogany, or nearly chocolate. What ties those shades together is the absence of true black pigment in the coat.
- Check the lower legs in natural light. Chestnut legs stay red, red-brown, or lighter where white markings occur. Bay horses usually show true black below the knees and hocks.
- Look through the mane and tail. Chestnut hair may be dark red-brown, but it should not have the flat black appearance typical of bay points. Flaxen manes and tails are also common in some chestnuts.
- Check the ear rims and muzzle. Dark shading can occur, but it should still read as red-brown rather than black.
- Use more than one light source. Barn shade, wet hair, winter coats, and phone-camera processing can make red pigment look much darker than it is.
Best field test: Stand beside the horse outdoors and compare the lower legs, mane, and tail. If those areas are genuinely black, the horse is unlikely to be chestnut.
What genetics make a horse chestnut?
The basic chestnut color is controlled by the MC1R gene, also called Extension or red factor. UC Davis identifies chestnut as an autosomal recessive trait. Horses with two recessive red-factor alleles produce red pigment, called pheomelanin, instead of black pigment in the coat.
Common chestnut genotypes include e/e, e/ea, and ea/ea. The alternate ea allele is rare. In practical terms, a chestnut horse passes a recessive red-factor allele to every foal.
The Agouti gene controls where black pigment appears, but a chestnut horse does not make black coat pigment for Agouti to distribute. That is why a chestnut can carry Agouti variants without looking bay.

DNA testing is most useful when breeding outcomes matter or when a dark coat is visually ambiguous. It is not required to use the practical black-points check on an obvious chestnut.
Chestnut vs. sorrel: are they the same color?
In most everyday horse-color discussions, sorrel is a chestnut shade or a regional name for chestnut, not a separate genetic base color. Western and stock-horse barns often use sorrel for a bright copper or orange-red horse. English, sport-horse, and genetics conversations tend to use chestnut as the broader term.
Registry language can differ, so the same horse may be called sorrel in one setting and chestnut in another. The genetics do not change with the label.

Can chestnut horses have white markings?
Yes. A chestnut horse may have a star, stripe, blaze, snip, socks, stockings, or larger white-pattern areas. White spotting genes can occur on any base color. The white markings do not change the horse's underlying chestnut base.
Small areas of dark skin beneath white hair can also affect how markings look when wet or clipped. Identify the base color from the pigmented coat, mane, tail, and legs outside the white pattern.
Do chestnut horses change color?
The genetic base remains chestnut, but the visible shade can shift during the year and across the horse's life.
- Winter coats: Longer hair can make the coat look darker, duller, or less even.
- Summer sun: Mane, tail, and topline hair can fade, especially with heavy turnout.
- Sweat and dust: Residue can flatten the red tones and create uneven patches.
- Clipping: Freshly clipped hair may look temporarily lighter or grayer than the settled coat.
- Foal coats: A chestnut foal may shed to a noticeably different shade while keeping the same red base.
- Gray gene: A horse born chestnut can progressively gray if it inherited the gray mutation.
Do chestnut horses have a certain temperament?
No reliable coat-color rule can tell you whether an individual horse will be hot, stubborn, kind, sensitive, or easy. Temperament is shaped by genetics far beyond basic coat color, along with training, health, handling, environment, and experience.

How to care for a chestnut coat
Grooming cannot change the horse's genetic color. It can help the coat stay clean, comfortable, and reflective enough for the natural red tones to show.
- Remove sweat after work. Rinse or towel the coat as conditions allow, then let it dry before brushing.
- Use clean tools. A dirty curry or brush moves residue back onto the hair and can dull the finish.
- Do not over-bathe. Use a horse-appropriate shampoo when a full wash is needed and rinse thoroughly.
- Manage sun exposure realistically. Shade and turnout timing can reduce fading, but horse comfort and airflow come first.
