Cannon Crud in Horses: Lower-Leg Skin Checks & Care Routine

Cannon crud is a barn term for waxy, crusty, flaky, or greasy buildup on the cannon area. The answer is not aggressive scrubbing. It is better inspection, cleaner gear, full drying, and the right skin-care path.

Quick answer: Do not scrub cannon crud raw. Loosen buildup gently, clean only as needed, dry the leg fully, clean boots and wraps, and choose cream, spray, or salve based on what the skin actually looks like.

Skin-care next step

Use the skin router before guessing.

If it is routine lower-leg skin care, choose the product format that matches the area. If you are not sure whether it is skin, hoof, heel, or recovery, route it first.

Slow down if

  • The area is unusually hot, swollen, painful, draining, bleeding, or spreading.
  • The horse is sensitive to touch or reacting strongly.
  • Multiple legs or multiple horses are affected.
  • The skin keeps returning to the same problem despite better hygiene.

What to check

  • Location: front cannons, hind cannons, one leg, or all four?
  • Texture: waxy, greasy, flaky, crusty, scabby, or thickened?
  • Skin response: does the horse react when touched?
  • Moisture and gear: boots, wraps, mud, sweat, towels, and dirty brushes can all contribute.
  • Trend: improving, holding, spreading, or worsening?

Clean routine

  1. Brush off loose dirt and debris.
  2. Soften buildup gently if needed.
  3. Do not rip, scrape, or scrub until the skin is raw.
  4. Wash only when necessary and rinse fully.
  5. Dry the leg completely.
  6. Clean boots, wraps, towels, and brushes before reuse.
