Why Horses Overreach Or Forge
Overreaching happens when the hind hoof clips or hits the heel of the front hoof. Forging is when the hind toe hits the front shoe as the horse breaks over. Both usually mean the hind end is catching up faster than the front end can get out of the way.
What Riders Notice First
- A sharp “click” during trot work
- Hind feet stepping into or onto front feet
- More forging when rushing or going downhill
- Worse at the end of a ride when the horse is tired
Common Causes
- Long toes or hoof balance issues
- Fatigue or lack of strength
- Restricted front end motion
- Overactive hind end with poor lift in front
- Rushing or inconsistent rhythm
Quick Rider Checks
- Check trim cycle and hoof angles
- Slow the rhythm — does forging stop
- Feel for back or shoulder stiffness
- Notice if it happens only when tired
