Scratches in Horses

Scratches-style lower-leg irritation usually starts with environment, moisture, mud, hair, friction, and missed early checks. The first job is to clean up the routine, not guess at a miracle fix.

Quick answer: Keep the area clean, dry, and monitored. If skin is open, hot, painful, spreading, swollen, draining, or not improving, involve your veterinarian.

Daily barn checks

  • Reduce mud exposure where possible.
  • Dry lower legs before long stall time.
  • Check heels, pasterns, fetlocks, and boot contact areas.
  • Do not trap moisture under wraps or heavy product layers.
  • Track changes instead of guessing.

Patch testing and restraint prevent more problems than switching products constantly.
