Rider checking a horse's skin and saddle-contact area after a hot ride

Quick Answer

If a horse develops bumps or irritation under tack, stop using equipment over the area and inspect the skin, pad, girth, fit, sweat, moisture, dirt, and friction. Clean and dry equipment before reuse. Call the veterinarian for painful, open, oozing, spreading, swollen, infected-looking, recurrent, or persistent skin changes.

“Heat rash” is a common barn phrase, not a specific diagnosis. Bumps under tack can reflect sweat and friction, but hives, follicle irritation, infection, contact reaction, pressure, and other skin problems can look similar.

Remove Tack and Inspect

Part the hair and look for redness, bumps, crusts, scabs, hair loss, moisture, discharge, heat, swelling, and pain. Map the location: saddle panel, spine, withers, shoulder, girth path, chest, or edge of a pad or boot.

Location can point to the contact pattern. It still does not prove the diagnosis.

Inspect Everything That Touched the Horse

  • Pad, half pad, girth, cinch, breast collar, surcingle, or blanket.
  • Dried sweat, salt, hair, dirt, detergent residue, and embedded grit.
  • Rough seams, worn edges, wrinkles, pressure points, and uneven placement.
  • New materials, cleaners, sprays, or topical products.

Stop Friction

Do not ride over irritated or broken skin. Let the area cool and dry, keep it clean according to veterinary guidance, and avoid covering it with the same equipment. Repeated rubbing can turn mild irritation into an open wound.

Review Fit and Airflow

A clean pad can still create a problem when saddle balance, girth fit, pressure, movement, or heat trapping is wrong. Ask a qualified saddle fitter when marks repeat in the same place. Rotate clean dry pads and allow equipment to dry fully.

Be Careful With Topicals

Do not layer liniments, salves, essential oils, antiseptics, or other products on unexplained irritated skin. Some products are not intended for broken skin or beneath tack. Follow the current label and veterinarian’s direction.

Prevent the Next Flare

  • Start each ride with clean, dry contact surfaces.
  • Rinse or groom dried sweat as appropriate.
  • Wash pads and girths with a compatible detergent and rinse thoroughly.
  • Dry the horse and equipment before reuse.
  • Recheck fit when body condition, workload, or equipment changes.

Where Draw It Out® Fits

Use the Horse Health Library for skin and tack education. Select any topical product only when its current label fits intact skin and the intended use. Draw It Out® products do not replace diagnosis or treatment of an active skin problem.

FAQ

Can dirty tack cause skin irritation?

Sweat, salt, dirt, moisture, and friction under tack can contribute to irritation.

Should I ride over heat rash?

No. Stop friction and get veterinary guidance for painful, open, spreading, oozing, recurrent, or persistent changes.

Can I put liniment on the rash?

Do not apply a product to unexplained irritated or broken skin unless the current label and veterinarian support that use.
