Winter Horse Coat Care: Sweat, Blankets, and Daily Skin Checks

A thick winter coat protects the horse, but it can also hide sweat, rubs, trapped dirt, and damp skin. The winning routine is simple: dry the horse completely, lift the coat, inspect the skin, and re-blanket only when the horse and equipment are ready.

Quick answer: Remove blankets regularly, brush down to the skin, check shoulders and withers, dry sweat before covering the horse again, and clean wet or muddy equipment. Do not use powder or another grooming product to hide a problem that needs inspection.

The five places winter trouble hides

After a winter ride

  1. Walk until breathing and temperature settle.

  4. Brush away dried sweat and check the skin underneath.
  5. Re-blanket only when the coat is dry enough and the blanket is clean and properly fitted.

Daily blanket discipline

A blanket can look fine from the aisle while rubbing the shoulders or trapping moisture underneath. Remove it daily when practical. Run your hands over matching areas, compare left to right, and check for heat, tenderness, hair loss, dampness, and pressure.

Drying, brushing, clean coolers, clean blankets, fit checks, and consistent observation.
