Mud Season Skin Defense: Prevent Rain Rot & Protect Pasterns

When footing turns to soup, skin pays the price. Here’s a calm, show-safe plan that keeps heels dry, pasterns happy, and tomorrow’s ride on track.

Why Wet Seasons Trigger Skin Trouble

Water, mud, and friction team up to soften skin and let bacteria party. Add clipped legs, long days, or boots that stay damp, and you’ve got a recipe for scabs and soreness. The fix is boring—in a good way: clean fast, dry fully, and add a light barrier that doesn’t smother.

5-Minute Daily Defense Routine

  1. Knock off the mud. Hose lightly or sponge with lukewarm water. Skip the harsh scrubbing; you’re cleaning, not polishing.
  2. Pat to dry. Blot heels and pastern creases. Dry skin is resilient skin.
  3. Dust the splash-zones. Apply a light layer of ShowBarn Secret® Powder Coat to help reduce moisture and rub without gumming things up.
  4. Target hot spots. If you see early irritation, smooth on a thin layer of RESTOREaHORSE®. Let it breathe; don’t trap it under tight wraps.
  5. Check boots & turnout. Rotate boots; keep them clean and dry. In deep mud, consider shorter turnout windows until footing improves.
Pro tip: Keep a “mud cart” by the wash rack—towels, soft brush, Powder Coat, and RESTOREaHORSE®. Fast setups make good habits stick.

When to Pause & Escalate

Stop riding and call your vet if the area is hot, spreading, painful, or your horse is off. Skin is a health signal—listen early and you’ll be back in the tack faster.

Always follow label directions. Patch-test new products. If irritation persists or your horse is lame, consult your veterinarian.
