Plan the Day Pre-Ride Cool Down Recovery Heat Stress Signs
Quick rule: Water always available. Electrolytes measured. Shade and airflow prioritized. Cool → scrape → repeat.

Plan the Day

  • Ride early or late whenever possible
  • Shorten work sets and increase walk breaks
  • Stage water buckets in shade
  • Use fans or airflow where safe

Hydration Routine

  • Use electrolytes when heat, sweat, or hauling increase demand
  • Always provide plain water beside electrolyte mixes
  • Encourage drinking before and after work

Pre Ride

  • Offer water before tacking
  • Check for heat or swelling
  • Confirm saddle pad and girth are dry

During Work

  • Short sets with longer walk breaks
  • Use shade lanes if possible
  • Watch breathing and attitude

Cooling

  • Walk down
  • Hose with cool water
  • Scrape between passes
  • Repeat until breathing normalizes

Post Ride Recovery

  1. Cool completely first
  2. Offer water again
  3. Reintroduce electrolytes if sweating was heavy
  4. Apply liniment gel if part of your routine

Hauling in Heat

  • Offer water before loading
  • Vent trailer safely
  • Offer water at stops
  • Walk horse after arrival
Heat stress signs:
  • Rapid breathing or panting
  • Dullness or weakness
  • Dry gums
  • Very dark urine
  • Refusal to drink
