How to Apply Horse Gel Under Wraps (Step by Step)

Why Use Horse Gel Under Wraps?

Using a wrap-safe horse gel under standing wraps supports comfort and recovery after work, hauling, or when legs are prone to stocking up. The gel format stays where you put it, delivers sensation-free comfort, and plays well with overnight support.

Quick take: Even coverage + correct wrap tension = consistent, comfortable support.

What You’ll Need

Time: ~8–10 minutes (both fronts or both hinds)
Skill level: Easy (basic wrap skills)

Step-by-Step Instructions

1) Clean & Dry the Legs

Brush off debris and make sure the legs are dry. Moisture under wraps can trap heat or cause irritation.

2) Apply a Light, Even Layer of Gel

Start with a pea-to-nickel sized amount per area. Massage the horse gel through the hair to the skin using circular pressure. Even coverage beats thick layers.

3) Place the Cotton Quilt

Center the cotton on the cannon bone from just below the knee/hock to just above the fetlock. Smooth out folds.

4) Apply the Standing Wrap

Start in the middle and wrap downward, then back up, overlapping each pass by ~50%. Tension should be snug but not tight.

Pro tip: If you’re new to wrapping, keep a finger under the bandage as you go to gauge consistent, gentle pressure.

5) Check Tension & Alignment

Ensure even pressure and straight alignment—no wrinkles or pressure points. Compare both legs for symmetry.

6) Monitor, Then Remove

Check after 1–2 hours the first time you try this routine. For overnight use, re-check at turnout/AM. Remove by unrolling the wrap—don’t drag it down the leg.

Fit & Safety Checks

  • Skin comfort: The formula is sensation-free; if your horse shows sensitivity, remove, towel off, and reassess.
  • Even pressure: No “hot spots.” If in doubt, rewrap lighter.
  • Clean gear: Use clean cottons and bandages to avoid irritation.

How to Remove & Reapply

Unroll wraps, lift cottons straight off, and feel legs for even coolness and comfort. You don’t need to wash the gel off between uses; a quick wipe with a damp towel is optional before reapplying.

Horse Gel Under Wraps: FAQ

How much gel should I use under wraps?
Use a light, even layer—think pea-to-nickel size per area. More product doesn’t mean more benefit.
Do I have to wash off the gel before rewrapping?
No. You don’t need to. If you prefer, wipe with a damp towel before reapplication.
Can I use this before a competition?
Draw It Out® gel is formulated to be competition-friendly. Always follow your discipline’s current rules.
Front legs or hind legs first?
Either is fine—be consistent and match tension/placement on the pair you’re wrapping.
