When your horse feels “not quite right”

A shorter stride. A braced back. A reluctance you do not usually feel. You know your horse’s normal, and a change deserves attention even when you cannot see an obvious limp.

“Phantom lameness” describes a feeling, not a diagnosis

Riders sometimes use the phrase when something feels off but the cause is unclear. It does not tell you whether the issue involves tack, feet, workload, discomfort or another concern. Do not assume that a subtle change is harmless or that it proves inflammation.

Start with what changed

  • Pause the work and note when you first noticed the difference.
  • Record whether it happens in one direction, during one transition, under saddle or at other times.
  • Look for changes in feet, tack fit, skin condition, heat, swelling and the horse’s usual behavior.
  • Contact your veterinarian for pain, lameness, marked heat or swelling, worsening signs, or a change that keeps returning. Do not ride through it to test a product.

Keep the routine clear

Follow the current Gel label for application and any use with pads, boots or wraps. Use the amount and frequency directed for the product rather than escalating because a horse still feels off. Avoid unapproved mixtures and keep the horse’s response at the center of the plan.
