Labor Day Is Also Permission to Rest

Some people are very good at working and remarkably bad at stopping.

They carry one more bag, answer one more message, fix one more thing and promise themselves they will sit down when the list is finished. The trouble is that honest work rarely produces a finished list. It produces another morning.

Labor Day honors the contribution of working people. It can also remind us that the person doing the work is not disposable.

The body keeps the receipts

Work lives in the hands, shoulders, back and feet. It lives in the tiredness that follows a long shift, a full day in the barn, a week on the road or years spent doing what needed to be done.

There is dignity in that effort. There is also wisdom in knowing when to set the load down.

Rest is not a betrayal of hard work. It is respect for the person who has to return to it. A quiet meal, an unhurried hour, a nap, a walk or a little time with the people and animals who make the work worthwhile can be enough.

Honor every kind of worker

Today we honor the people in factories, warehouses, clinics, classrooms, kitchens, offices, trucks, shops, barns and fields. We honor those building a business, holding a household together, caring for a parent, raising children or doing several of those jobs at once.

Much of that labor is paid. Some of the hardest is not. All of it leaves a mark.

Let today be enough

You do not have to earn every quiet moment twice. If the work can wait, let it wait. If someone has carried part of your load this year, thank them. If you have carried more than anyone knows, give yourself a little grace.

Today is not a pitch. It is a pause.

To everyone who keeps showing up, solving problems, carrying responsibility and doing the job right, thank you. May your work be respected and may you find a little room to breathe before tomorrow begins.

Happy Labor Day from ReJüv™.
