Horse Recovery Routine: A Simple Step-by-Step Guide | Draw It Out®

Horse Recovery Routine

The best recovery routine is the one you repeat. This step-by-step guide is designed for real riders and real horses.

A Simple Post-Ride Recovery Routine

This routine works for most working horses and can be adjusted based on workload, travel, and individual sensitivity.

  1. Cool the horse down.
Walk until breathing normalizes and body temperature begins to drop. Use airflow or cool water when appropriate.
  2. Apply liniment gel.
Once the horse is cooling, apply a thin, even layer of liniment gel to the areas you want to support.
  3. Allow absorption.
Give the gel time to absorb before adding wraps, turnout, or blankets.
  4. Optional wrapping.
Wrap only when appropriate, checking heat and comfort shortly after.
  5. Light movement.
Turnout or hand walking helps tissues stay fluid during the recovery window.
Remember: Timing and consistency matter more than doing everything.

How Often Should You Follow This Routine?

After every ride that challenges the horse. Consistency keeps recovery predictable and reduces surprise stiffness.

Adjusting for Heavy Work or Travel

  • Tighten your schedule, not your horse
  • Support earlier rather than reacting later
  • Stick to familiar routines during show weeks
Trailboss truth: Horses relax into routines they recognize.
