Quick answer: “Stocked up” commonly describes soft lower-leg filling after reduced movement, travel, or a schedule change. It should be cool, relatively even, and nonpainful. Do not assume every swollen leg is routine stocking up. Compare both sides and take heat, pain, lameness, and persistence seriously.
Stand the horse on a safe, level surface. Look before touching. Compare matching areas on both legs, then feel gently for temperature, texture, sensitivity, and where the swelling begins and ends. Note gait before deciding that movement is appropriate.
Look at the ride, footing, cool-down, hauling, stall time, turnout, shoes, wraps, and previous history. Occasional mild fill may respond to a better movement schedule, but recurring filling deserves a veterinary conversation rather than an endless series of management guesses.
A labeled topical such as Draw It Out® 16oz Liniment Gel may fit routine after-work care once injury and urgent causes have been ruled out. Do not massage or wrap an acutely painful, hot, or unexplained leg unless your veterinarian directs it.
Call the veterinarian for heat, pain, one-sided or rapidly increasing swelling, lameness, a wound or puncture, fever, swelling that extends upward, or a horse that is systemically unwell.
Use the Horse Care Solution Finder only after the leg has been properly assessed.
