Dog Care Before a Summer Road Trip: What to Pack and Check First
A good dog road trip starts before the truck door closes. Check skin, paws, nose, coat, hydration, rest breaks, and your travel-care kit before the miles stack up.
Short answer: Before a summer road trip, pack water, a leash, towels, waste bags, food, medications, vaccination records if needed, and a simple grooming and topical-care kit. Check paws, nose, belly, armpits, collar area, coat, and movement before leaving and after long stops.

Why road trips are harder on dogs than they look
A long ride can mean heat, dry air, strange surfaces, truck-stop grass, hotel floors, campground dust, and more licking than usual. None of that means panic. It means routine.
The pre-trip dog check

Paws: check between toes and around pads for redness, grit, burrs, cracking, tenderness, or extra licking.

Nose: check for dryness, crusting, or rough edges before sun, wind, or air conditioning.

Belly and armpits: look for moisture, grass, dust, and friction.

Collar and harness area: check rubbing and heat buildup.

Movement: watch how your dog gets in and out of the vehicle.

- Offer water.
- Walk calmly before feeding.
