Horse Lethargy vs Weakness: What to Do

A tired horse and a weak horse are not the same. Lethargy can come from heat, illness, dehydration, pain, stress, travel, or overwork. Weakness can signal a more serious medical problem.

What to check

  • Temperature, attitude, appetite, and water intake.
  • Gums, manure, urine, and breathing.
  • Lameness, swelling, trembling, or reluctance to move.
  • Recent travel, heat, hard work, feed change, or illness exposure.

When to call the vet

Call your veterinarian for fever, severe dullness, weakness, colic signs, dehydration, neurologic signs, or any horse that does not seem right.
