Quick answer: Daily leg care is comparison. Check all four legs before work, watch the horse move, cool down, clean and dry the legs, then compare heat, filling, pulse, tenderness, skin, and gait with the horse's normal baseline.
Before training
- Watch the horse walk and turn on safe footing
- Run hands down each leg in the same order
- Compare left with right for heat and filling
- Check digital pulse and hoof condition
- Inspect skin, old scars, boots, wraps, and tack areas
After training
- Reduce intensity and walk until recovery is moving toward baseline.
- Remove boots or wraps and inspect the skin underneath.
- Rinse or brush away sweat and dirt as the weather and routine allow.
- Dry the legs before reapplying equipment or a topical.
- Recheck later and again the next morning after harder work.
Do not normalize every filled leg
Some horses have familiar patterns after stall time or travel, but a new, one-sided, hot, painful, rapidly increasing, or gait-changing swelling deserves a different response. Record what changed and involve the veterinarian.
Wraps require skill
Use clean padding, even tension, and correct overlap. Never assume a topical makes a poor wrap safe. Remove and reapply any wrap that slips, bunches, creates pressure, or changes the horse's comfort.
